Halifax, NS - As the laps wound down in the
Atlantic CAT 250, Derek looked in good shape with a
fresh set of tires and good lap times. Having survived
numerous bumps and shoves during the first 200 laps,
Derek looked like he was on the way to a top five
finish. But with 50 laps to go, suddenly the ignition
lost the spark and the motor died on the back straight.
Some troubleshooting in the pit stall didn't explain the
failure or point to a repair, so the #35 was pushed to
the end of pit lane and a 16th place was recorded in the
finishing list. |

July 28th -
Groveton, NH. Preparation of the back-up car used
by Kyle Busch at All-Star Speedway made for a tough
week. Graphics changes were a low priority so the
car ran with the previous Pullen/Swaney/Lux/SNF
decals.
The
tangles started early - lap one - and happened often
with Derek repeatedly caught up in the bumps and
spins of others. Laps were lost early and Lucky Dog
free laps went to others, so the 35, though running
well,
placed 14th. |

PLACE AFTER A HARD HIT EARLY IN THE RACE - BAD NEWS FROM
ANTIGONISH, NS.
(July 22, 2007
- Antigonish, NS) With a 24th place "did not
finish" and a wrecked car, it was not a good weekend for the
Ramstrom Racing team. Races always work in the unexpected,
and Sunday’s race at New Riverside Speedway was no
exception. An opening lap incident, which should have ended
the #35‘s run, left the car without a scratch, and later an
event that should have been a non-event takes the car out.
Go figure.
Rain cancelled
Friday’s practice. With only about 30 seconds of track
practice Saturday, it was another long day of rain. The
younger members of the team took part in the boat races,
coming up with a second place finish.
All the
weekend’s action would be squeezed into Sunday. Practice
went well, and Derek won his heat race, which consisted of
ten cars.
The heat race
win gave Derek outside pole. On lap 1 a hard hit from behind
by an over anxious rookie who drove much to hard into turn
3, turned the #35 around in front of the entire field of
cars. It should have ended in disaster. Instead everyone got
by, and Derek was placed at the rear of the field.
In the laps
that followed, Derek had made his was up to 16th,
before his participation came to a crashing stop. Coming up
on a developing mishap he would have cleared, an unusual
carom off the retaining wall sent a car out in front of the
#35. Derek hit the other car hard, went over the car, became
airborne (which never slows you down), and hit the wall at
racing speed heavily damaging his car.
The long ride
home was made even longer by a couple of errands. The
damaged car was dropped off at the chassis shop and the
Ramstrom Racing car last used by Kyle Busch was picked up.
It will be a long week of work getting the back-up car
ready, and hopefully, the right side tire jinx will not
continue.

6/30: DEREK TAKES 6TH PLACE!
Epping,
NH – June 30, 2007) The #35 came home from
All-Star Speedway with a body that had been tire rubbed,
bent, and gouged on all four sides as it raced through
several multi-car incidents and 200-laps of hard and fast
racing. Derek and the Ramstrom Racing #35 claimed 6th place.
Derek started in the middle of a 29-car field. When caution
came on lap 13, due to an incident on the back stretch that
was seen to be developing between two cars in the prior
laps, Derek got caught up the slowing, spinning group of
cars, then the rear of his car jumped up from some contact,
and somehow the car popped out the other side of the mayhem
intact.
Both of
Derek’s spotters, who were certain the night was going to be
over for the #35, were in disbelief that the car was unhurt.
Derek was coached to ”check the toe” and to “make sure your
tires are OK”, but he reported the car seemed fine.
(Following the race it was found that a rear wheel had been
bent and the tire’s sidewall damaged.)
Knowing there were going to be 200 green flag laps in this
race, the team’s plan was to race smart in order to be
around at the end and to not use up the tires in the first
half of the race.
The next significant event in the race came on lap 74 when a
hit from behind in turn two sent Derek around and to the
tail of the pack.
On lap 94 with the #35 heading into turn four, the team
witnessed another opportunity for an early night when a
serious mishap took shape just in front of Derek. Somehow he
squeezed through the maze of braking and weaving cars and
continued on past to the start-finish line.
In the last half of the race, with most of the cars on worn
tires, passing became more difficult. Position on restarts -
the inside row being preferred over the outside - became an
important factor on whether a car moved forward or back
through the field. Despite the challenges of racing on well
worn tires and numerous restarts, with only a few laps to go
the Ramstrom Racing #35 was running in 6th when caution came
out for what would be the final time.
On the
final restart Derek was on the outside row and lost a
position to a car running the inside row. Unfortunately,
that closing lap pass took away the opportunity for a
Ramstrom Racing top-five PASS SLM finish. |
Epping, NH. - Nascar Nextel Cup driver Kyle Busch will be driving a spare car owned by Ramstrom Racing of West Boylston, Massachusetts
as the #51. This is the same car that Derek Ramstrom drove last year, winning the Outlaw Series Combo Championship. Kyle drove the team's SLM last year in the South Boston Mason Dixon Meltdown. (see the story here) - Derek will be driving the team's
#35 SLM in the June 30th PASS North All-Stars 200.
